Highland Games

Highland Games
The Highland Games (or ‘Heavy Events’), one of the most enduring images of Scotland today, help preserve forms of traditional Celtic sport and include events for men and women. The most famous event is tossing the caber, but others include throwing a weight for distance, the farmer’s walk (carrying weights of 300 pounds), the Scottish hammer and putting the stone. Strength alone is not enough for these events, and good technique is essential. The Highland Games are steeped in important cultural imagery (with most competitors eligible to wear a kilt), sustaining traditional Scottish sporting culture, and they now represent sporting landlords, the ascendancy of the landed classes and a romanticized Scottish cultural identity.
